The Fifth Toy Story Film Teaser Pits The Beloved Duo Versus a Digital Device
It has been 30 anniversary after the original Toy Story movie debuted, launching Pixar as a major animation studio and bringing viewers to iconic figures like Woody (Tom Hanks) and Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen), who are now household names.
In 2026, the fifth installment is set to arrive. The initial preview for Toy Story 5 appeared this week, offering a brief look into the storyline but leaving viewers curious how it will address the conclusion of Toy Story 4.
Bonnie's New Toy: A Digital Device Frightens the Gang
In the teaser reveals the young girl — who received the toy collection when he grew up — receiving a brand new plaything, one that terrifies the familiar toy group. She acquires her initial digital gadget, and she is thrilled about it.
Presumably, the amphibian-inspired device will animate just like the rest of her playthings. Still, the toys seem to view it as a threat coming to replace them, which it likely will.
Woody's Return: Mysteries from Toy Story 4
An element the teaser doesn't touch on is what Woody is returned with his companions in the child's bedroom. The finale of Toy Story 4 depicted him embark on a new adventure with Bo Peep (Annie Potts), journeying with a carnival and helping giveaway items find good homes.
Surely, Pixar will explain the aftermath of Toy Story 4 in the film. Seeing him appear in the familiar setting unexpectedly is somewhat puzzling, however. It also makes us wonder whether his partner will have returned with him. And where is the stuntman toy (the star)?
Connections from the Previous Film
Fortunately, some elements are carrying over from the earlier movie. The final act Woody did before departing for his new life was hand over his symbol of authority to the cowgirl (the voice actor), leaving her in charge of Bonnie's bedroom. The clip shows the badge attached to her shirt.
It is hoped she is still the driving force among the group.
Toy Story 5 debuts on June 19, 2026.
