In the dying moments, pure elation broke out for Chelsea and caretaker boss Calum McFarlane as Enzo Fernández forced home a dramatic equaliser. The goal left Pep Guardiola howling at the heavens and handed the temporary Chelsea manager a career-defining moment. On paper, Guardiola versus McFarlane represented the Premier League's most pronounced managerial mismatch in class, making the memory of Fernández's crucial intervention one to warm the 40-year-old for years to come.

A Stark Contrast in Pedigree

On the home bench was the era's defining coach, a man with an unparalleled CV for elite clubs Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and Manchester City, taking charge of his 1,012th match. In the opposite technical area, stood a former coach at lower-league sides Croydon and Whyteleafe, who had served in City's own academy and arrived to make his senior managerial bow after being seconded from his regular role guiding Chelsea's youth teams.

Factoring in a host of absences, most notably Chelsea's important midfielder Moisés Caicedo (suspended) and goalkeeper Robert Sánchez (injured), McFarlane's task began as a mission that seemed Mission: Impossible.
