Are You Able to Solve It? The Forgotten Dutch Invention That Shaped our Contemporary World

One can find many candidates for the title of “world’s most significant innovation.” The wheel. The movable type. The steam engine.

According to a new book, however, that honor should go to the mechanised sawmill invented through Dutch inventor Cornelis Corneliszoon in 1593.

“Prior to automated sawing, constructing a simple merchant vessel necessitated around ten sawyers laboring over 90 days,” notes the author. “With wind-powered lumber mills, an identical amount of processed timber might be produced in less than seven days.”

Thanks to their speedy automated saw, that converted timber into planks using virtually no human effort, Dutch builders were able to construct vessels more quickly compared to anyone else, which unleashed one hundred years of Dutch maritime, economic as well as cultural supremacy across Europe and the world.

The Original Genuine Industrial Device

Corneliszoon’s lumber mill, argues the writer, represented “mankind’s first true factory apparatus.” A windmill turned a gear. A single part transformed its rotary motion into up-and-down action for the saw. A separate mechanism changed that same spinning motion into a lateral movement feeding the timber toward the blade. A ratchet system moved the wood forward one precise increment each stroke.

“Every component seemed simple by itself. Corneliszoon’s brilliance lay in how to integrate them so they operated in a perfectly controlled order, cutting on every downward stroke while advancing on every upward motion. This constituted an astonishingly clever application of fundamental components.”
