An Significant Milestone when Liam Rosenior Shatters Obstacles

"Rosenior represents a top tactician who knows football intimately, and that's the crucial factor.

"However, in my role as the Blues' pioneering African heritage player, I would be lying to claim this appointment fails to move me."

Those are the sentiments expressed by Paul Canoville, who made his historic debut for the Blues' first team as a substitute in the spring of 1982.

This week, the club hired Strasbourg boss Liam Rosenior, 41, as their next manager following the departure of Enzo Maresca.

The French club is within the Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital-owned ownership group which also controls the London club.

Statistics show just twelve of African or Caribbean heritage head coaches – not including those holding interim positions – in the Premier League since it began 34 years ago.

"What really strikes me about Liam is he grew up and played locally, he knows this community," continued Canoville.

"When youngsters see a figure like Rosenior in charge of the team they support, someone they can identify with, from a similar background, from a family that fights for what's right… it is impactful and shows them the path is there.

"Indeed, this represents a massive step for the club, for the capital, for every aspiring individual with big dreams.

"But right now? We must support Rosenior, give him the necessary tools, and let the man do his work."

What Do the Data Indicate?

Dutch legend Ruud Gullit was appointed Chelsea head coach back in the nineties and became the Premier League's first African heritage manager.

Twelve years later, by 2008, Paul Ince became the first English black boss in the Premier League after taking charge at Blackburn Rovers.

The Hammers' boss Nuno Espirito Santo is the only other present Premier League gaffer from a minority ethnic background.

The scarcity of ethnic minority managers across English football is matched by an absence of diversity in the boardroom.

As per a Black Footballers Partnership 2023's study, forty-three percent of top-flight players come from African or Caribbean heritage.

However, analysis from Kick It Out found only 3.2 percent of executive and leadership positions across most Premier League clubs are held by people from minority ethnic backgrounds.

At senior coaching level, according to figures provided by 11 clubs, the figure stands at 2%.

For all coaching roles – including head coaches – from those same eleven clubs, the figure is five percent.

"He has undoubtedly made history in terms of his appointment as a Chelsea head coach, and we want to see more of that," said Kick It Out CEO Samuel Okafor.

"It is acknowledged that there exists a wealth of ability that exists within ethnic minority communities... they desire a chance to show their capabilities. We need to persist in striving to break those obstacles once and for all."

Furthermore, the new appointee will become the fourth full-time British managers presently in the Premier League – alongside Sean Dyche, Eddie Howe as well as Scott Parker – a number that lags behind Europe's remaining big five divisions in terms of homegrown representation.

Sixteen out of twenty first division managers in Italy are Italian, 11 in La Liga are Spanish, 12 in the Bundesliga are German and Ten of the 18 in France.

Current Blues interim boss Calum McFarlane said: "I have no doubt all young English managers with a youth development pedigree are, in some way regardless of allegiance, rooting for Liam.

"It's really inspirational to up-and-coming British coaches in the system to see an individual land that job with his background and everyone hopes he does highly successful."

'Let's not forget – he's there due to ability'

Leroy Rosenior, Rosenior Sr., had a career with clubs such as West London clubs, the Hammers and Queens Park Rangers, and his coaching stint culminating in a brief stint at the third-tier club Brentford FC in 2006.

Two years ago, he was awarded an MBE in the 2019 New Year Honours for his services in combating discrimination within the sport and wider society.

After Liam hung up his boots he followed his father's footsteps. He started penning articles for a national newspaper, where in 2017 he addressed the under-representation of black coaches. He pointed out that ethnicity does not influence coaching skill arguing that opportunities should be given based on qualification.

He also made the view he would repeat: that vast lack of diversity leads to misunderstandings regarding footballers from different cultural and ethnic heritage.

During an interview for a football podcast, Rosenior highlighted the way his star striker, Emmanuel Emegha, had been described as "hard to manage" or "passionate", noting that he understood the Netherlands international of Nigerian descent. The striker is expected to follow him in moving from France to Chelsea this summer.

In further Guardian columns, Rosenior also admitted to being "embarrassed" upon hearing an unnamed coach make a discriminatory remark. He pledged his support for the inclusion initiative and wrote a public message to Donald Trump while he was in office, condemning his "overt" prejudice.

Rosenior has since built his reputation as a manager – initially with Hull City, then Strasbourg – and Wayne Rooney said this week Rosenior was "as good a coach as I've ever worked with" following their time together with Derby.

Rosenior said goodbye to his former club on Tuesday morning prior to putting pen to paper on a long-term deal with the Blues.

The Blues had the Premier League's pioneering black manager in Gullit as well as the first black captain in Paul Elliott.
